Dancing Spirits: The Magic of The Northern Lights

Can you see the northern lights where you're from?

I've decided to write up a post about the northern lights and I also included a ritual at the end of this post.

Growing up in a town north of Thunder Bay, the northern lights have always been apart of the landscape of my life. I remember hearing stories that if you whistled at them they would come down and swoop you up, or that they would dance across the sky in response. Of course, being my curious self, I eventually had to try it. I whistled and suddenly the lights seemed to move incredibly fast, swirling and dancing across the sky, growing brighter before my eyes. Whether is was coincidence or something more, that moment stayed with me.

So lets dive in!

In modern witchcraft the aurora borealis are viewed as rare, highly potent surge of cosmic and celestial energy.

Often, witchcraft practitioners use the visual and energetic spectacle of the aurora for high vibration workings, meditation and boosting intuition and divination.

Spiritual Meaning: The lights are seen as a visible bridge between the worlds, representing the thin veil between earth and the cosmos.

Aurora Colors & Crystal Correspondences

Green → Healing, abundance, heart chakra, rapid growth, connection to nature → Green Aventurine, Malachite, Jade, Peridot.

Pink & Purple → High vibration love, cosmic consciousness, spirit guide protection, third eye activation → Amethyst, Lepidolite, Rose Quartz, Sulgilite.

Red →Primal passion, intense protection, root chakra, grounding, manifestation of major life changes → Garnet, Red Jasper, Ruby.

Blue & Violet → Throat chakra, truth, enhanced psychic sight, profound inner peace, astral travel → Lapis Lazuli, Celestite, Labradorite.

The Ultimate Aurora Stone

Labradorite is deeply tied to the northern lights. Inuit legend says a warrior struck and labradorite stone with a spear, freeing the trapped aurora into the sky, while leaving behind a shimmering iridescence inside the stone. That makes it useful to anchor aurora energy!

Traditional Arctic Folklore vs Modern Magick

Before practicing, understand how historical cultures view the lights. Modern witchcraft focuses on drawing in its energy, whereas traditional folklore advises keeping your distance.

Sami (Lapland): The lights are dangerous, sentient spirits. Whistling, singing, or waving under them is believed to alert the spirits, who might sweep down and chop your head off. Silence and respect are required.

Inuit (North America): Many believe the lights were the souls of their ancestors playing soccer in the heavens with the skull of a walrus.

Norse Mythology: The aurora is often envisioned as the glowing armor of the Valkyres as they ride across the sky to escort fallen warriors to Valhalla!

...and now for the RITUAL!

 Cosmic Alignment Ritual

This ritual bridges historical reverence with modern practice. It is designed to charge your intuition, third eye, and astral travel.

What you need:

• A piece of Labradorite
• A white, green, or purple candle
• A bowl of water

What to do:

Cleanse and ground yourself with your preferred method. If you can see the northern lights, observe them. If not, visualize its dancing waves above you.

Light the candle and say: " I connect to the infinite, dancing currents of the cosmos. May my vision be clear and my path be illuminated."

Anchor the light:

Hold your crystal and visualize the green and purple waves of the aurora pouring down into the stone, filling it with pulsing light.

Scry the waters:

Look into the bowl of water reflecting the light of the candle. Let your eyes soften. Notice and shapes, thoughts, or intuitive flashes that come to you. This is the aurora energy sparking your inner sight.

Close with gratitude:

Look up to the sky then bow your head as a sign of respect to the ancient spirits. Snuff out the candle and keep the crystal under your pillow for vivid and prophetic dreams!
